In a world increasingly besieged by the consequences of plastic pollution, initiatives that aim to tackle this issue head-on are more important than ever. P3 Distributing, a frontrunner in the wholesale packaging industry, is championing such an initiative through its annual Recyclethon event. This initiative is particularly pertinent this year as Earth Day 2024 embraces the theme “Planet vs Plastics,” highlighting the urgent need to address plastic pollution.

Scheduled for April with retailers in Portland, the Recyclethon event is a spirited competition among retail stores to collect plastic bottles for recycling from both staff and customers. While P3 Distributing is committed to recycling throughout the year, processing an impressive average of 1600 pounds of plastic monthly, the Recyclethon focuses these efforts into a month-long contest. Last year, Cannabis Curb in NE Portland set a remarkable precedent by collecting over 122 pounds of plastic, contributing significantly to the total of approximately 700 pounds. This year, the goal is even more ambitious, with P3 aiming to collect a whopping 1,000 pounds of plastic.

Patrick Caldwell, Co-Founder and Owner of P3 Distributing, emphasizes the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship, stating, “At P3 we’re passionate about recycling and doing what we can to help the environment. We hope Recyclethon encourages even more people and businesses to focus on recycling and then hopefully incorporate it into their daily routine.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding of recycling’s critical role in environmental conservation.

The importance of recycling cannot be overstated. Americans discard an astonishing 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour, and recycling just one ton of these bottles can save enough energy to power a two-person household for an entire year. The benefits extend far beyond energy savings, including conserving finite natural resources, saving fresh water, preventing waste from entering our oceans, and significantly reducing the use of fossil fuel energy and CO2 emissions.

However, despite these known benefits, a recent Yale University/EPA study reveals that the U.S. recycles less than 22% of its discarded materials. This statistic underscores the urgent need for initiatives like the Recyclethon, which not only promote recycling but also aim to integrate it into the daily routines of individuals and businesses alike.

Since our inception in 2016 by my father and I, P3 Distributing has not only excelled as a top wholesale package supplier but also demonstrated an unwavering commitment to service and environmental sustainability. Through efforts like the Recyclethon, we’re working to make a tangible impact, encouraging a collective movement towards a more sustainable and plastic-free planet. As Earth Day 2024 approaches, initiatives like these remind us of the power of community action in combating one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.
